As I See It is a solo exhibition by Crystal Rocha at Mercury Project. This body follows a series of paintings that reflect an introspective dialogue along with a sense of movement within the past and present. Rocha’s goal with these works is to access and gather memories that provoke and create a feeling of familiarity.
These works follow an attention to detail in these mundane but delicate settings that follow alongside things I see in my daily life. Immortalizing these moments since memories can last a lifetime. People come and go. The drink will be drunk. This isn’t my first time. Recycled moments that compare to another. This exhibition explores the idea of reading each piece in a way to move in time with these paintings. As we move forward, I often find myself reflecting on memories and what they mean to me. Encasing and preserving these ordinary stills. As I see it.

Seeing it as it is—
The corner at Low country that was once the home of to my lover’s quarrels to admiring Chavela singing on Valentine’s day with new loves.
Having a playdate to the accessories you wore for my birthday dinner.
The lifeless dove I saw on the ground moments after passing  to seeing my father take his last breath.
The drink abandoned in the Lonesome bathroom to 30 minutes later when it was knocked over.
